Laura has cashed in on a trip to Chicago this weekend which leaves the boys at home to rule the household. I'm already making progress by having both boys in bed by 7:30 tonight vs. 8:30 last night. More time to continue to crank through my Fringe marathon viewing.
It has allowed me to hear some things I normally don't hear. I was trying to peer into Miles eye to make sure his contact was still in and he looks at me and says "It's in there" as he points to his good eye. Totally reading what I am trying to do without me saying anything. :) Hopefully he will be at the point soon to tell us when it is not in his eye. I also had the idea to start bribing him since getting the contact in and out has been a little difficult. Judge us if you want, but if M&M's at 7 AM make the process easier, we are doing it.
Sometimes I swear they just like to punish us. Miles has not been up before 6 in weeks. This morning 5:40 he's up and ready to go and then the nap is only an hour and a half. I'm hoping that means he will crash tonight. Laura started something where he wants his neck and back scratched before he will go to sleep. He would like you do to this for an hour. He gets about 90 seconds with me. He has a train book where one of the trains makes a grumpy face. He stopped me there and told me to make a grumpy face which he preceded to, pretty comical.
I made the big mistake of promising mini putt and driving there without checking to make sure it was open first. That got me the big lip of Chase as he tried to fight back the tears. That and him asking to go Bowling and me being so cheap that I'm waiting for $1 games on Sunday instead of $2 dollar games on Friday.
Rule Changes for Dad vs. Mom
- Electronic time probably doubles (although I did get out the race track Laura hates to distract Miles from the Ipad)
- Meals are an adventure - mostly yogurt and applesauce or Mcdonald's
- Trips somewhere are mandatory - sitting in the house the whole time drives us all crazy. This can be as simple as walking around Target although this leads to stupid purchases like a Halloween gingerbread house
- Projects happen while Miles naps with Laura, absolutely nothing happens from my perspective
- 3 hours on Saturday and Sunday are devoted to football, which basically means they need to entertain themselves and hopefully Miles naps during 2 of them
Two days to go

We are raising football players
I came home from work the other day to Chase and Miles just running at each other and tackling one another over and over again. This went on for 30 minutes after I got home. It is only a matter of time before we have to get them stitches because there are too many things to run into. Chase basically grabs Miles by the head and pulls him down and then Miles jumps right back on top of him. If Miles can't get his brother to play with him, he uses one of his parents. This involves getting into a three point stance before you can start, saying "hut", and then he runs and tackles you. He would do this for hours if you let him.
Miles is also on a hunger strike. He refuses to eat anything but crackers, yogurt, and cheerios. I haven't seen him eat supper for weeks. He gets in his chair and then tells you he wants to get out. If you don't do it immediately he then screams at you to "get out". This kid has anger problems, when his trains fall of the track he lets out a high pitched scream and starts chucking things across the room. This may get fun later in life. He takes after his dad after Iowa State gets ripped off in sports.
Miles also is refusing to wear anything unless it is a Minnesota Twins shirt. This makes me very proud, I wore the same sweatshirt to school about every third day. I also never wore jeans until I was 22 years old, I don't think the boys will get away with that.
Chase is back in school, three times a week now from 9 until 2. We get these glowing reports from school about how nice and kind and polite he is. My only question is, where is this kid at home? Just kidding, 90% of the time he is pretty good, but he must avoid that 10% at school. We always get these pictures of him with his eyes squeezed shut and this cheesy grin on his face.

Miles 2nd Birthday
Miles tuned 2 a few weeks back and we found that Miles was a little less excited than his brother, or maybe it was because Chase just took over the birthday. We continued our theme of Cars cakes although Miles was a Guido fan instead of Doc Hudson. Laura continued her mastery of cakes, if you want to hire her she will do it for $100 bucks, just let me know and then I will run the idea by her.
Since we couldn't think of anything that Miles actually needed for his birthday, we tried to run to Target to find toys and came away with nothing. Laura didn't trust me to go by myself for some reason since she thought I couldn't pick out toys for a 2 year old. Since we couldn't find anything I just decided to take Miles to Toys R us with me and have him pick out his own presents. I figured that was the last year I could get away with that since he would forget from the time he picked it out to when I actually wrapped it.
Miles did not quite understand the whole unwrapping present concept either. Or that he was supposed to eat his birthday cake, which he never actually touched. His brother helped take care of everything though, so we got through the birthday party pretty well. The highlight presents were the race car tracks, a new bat and ball, and honestly I've already forgotten everything else. Miles probably would have really just liked his own Ipad, but he needs to get his own modeling job if he wants that.
His favorite part of the day was playing with his balloons in just his diaper. I never would have gotten the balloons so he has his mom to thank for that. Overall a good second birthday, and probably the last one for a few years that he won't know what is going on.

T-Ball
Chase started his first organized sport this spring with 3 weeks of T-Ball. We went in with big expectations based on his ability to hit the ball at home. We quickly learned that there are some things he's pretty good at, but he still needs a little work on the whole catching the ball thing.
It also gave us our first chance to compare him to a bunch of other 4 year olds. Everybody was pretty much at the same level. Hopeless to actually catch a ball in a glove, but a lot of valiant efforts. Everyone learned how to point, step, and throw. We did experience our first jealous reaction to another 4 year old. His name was Max. Max could chuck a ball 40 feet and catch a ball that his dad threw. He could run faster than Laura and could hit the ball pretty decently. His mom was a good yeller, so I told Laura she needed to start yelling some more too. Oh well, guess we need to practice for next year.
Chase got a big medal at the end and was pretty excited. If we weren't in Iowa the next 5 weekends we could have done summer t-ball, but that will have to be it for this year.
Last weekend was boys weekend at the house. Actually the first time I had the boys by myself overnight for more than one night. (Don't tell Laura that) We managed pretty well. Saturday involved going to the zoo that is an hour away. That way you get two hours of driving built in. We had a pretty good time there looking at all the animals. Miles liked the monkeys and the fish. He was also pretty fascinated by the cows. Sunday we hung around the house and played outside on our $5 dollar slip and slide which worked like you would expect a $5 dollar slip and slide to work.
I'm once again reminded that I could not be a stay at home dad until they are both in school. We bought a new camera last weekend as well so we are actually taking more pictures. The link to them is below.

Vacation - 3 year old style
After our trip to Boston with a 2 year old Chase we swore we would wait until he was at least 5, but we went against that and decided to take him to San Diego a couple of weeks ago. All in all, a pretty good trip. As long as you are OK doing things a 3 year old would like, which we are pretty much OK with by this time.
It started with us driving around San Diego Monday night just checking things out and Chase saying he had to go to the bathroom so we pulled over by a beach. Instead of going to the bathroom he takes off down some stairs and heads to a beach that I had read about. It had some cool rocks and hundreds of seals hanging out.
Our next two days were at the magical world of LEGOLAND. This is like every 3 or 4 year old's dream. Basically it is ride's catered to someone who is 40 inches tall. We also went at the perfect time since we had no lines. We literally rode one roller coaster called "the dragon" about 40 times. We tried to use the water park which we thought would feel warm at 70, but still was slightly cold. It didn't stop Chase and I from going on this water boat ride that drenched us and he was shivering uncontrollably. His first comment, "let's do it again"
We also inspired a house building contest at one of the lego stations and I was able to replicate some master builders duck that they had built. I tried to leave it on the shelf with the other one, but we went back the next day and it was gone, not cool.
We tried the San Diego zoo the next day, but we learned that Chase is more of an action guy. He would walk up to a cage, look at the animal for about 2 seconds, and then say, let's go to the next one. This also involved a lot of carrying a 40 lb kid, which is exhausting for me as well. We finished off our vacation at a couple of weeks as the weather finally got into the 80's.
To the worry of my dad, the next day I had to drive up to LA so I just dropped off Laura and Chase at a park and they had to taxi it back to the airport. They were just fine and ended up finding a pretty cool train museum that was one of Chase's highlights.
Miles gave me the cold shoulder when I got back for around 5 minutes, then we were all good. So Chase set up himself and his brother for future trips as of now.

We finally nailed a birthday present!
Chase turned 4 last week which is crazy in itself. Historically Laura and I have been hit or miss on his presents. Last year it was a set of golf clubs that we have used about twice. Then it was a train table at Christmas that seemed like it couldn't miss. It hardly gets played with. So for birthday number 4 we went with his first real bike.
It started out suspect as it was his last present of the day and as we pulled it off he tried to climb on and he could barely touch the pedals. He immediately jumped back off to go back inside and play with a dice game. After a few adjustments we decided to try it again and by the end of the night he had pretty much mastered it.
It led to the following conversation almost happening last night. Me - "Do you want to have movie night", Chase - "No, I want to ride my bike outside", Me - "Sorry kid, I want you to sit inside on your butt and watch a movie, not play outside" Realizing that wasn't setting a good example, we ended up going for a ride.
Only two wipe outs so far, but I'm sure we will have some good ones coming up. Thanks to Grandpa for putting it together so I did not have to.
The birthday cake this year was themed after Wreck-it Ralph. I wanted her to build the full tower, but Chase let Laura off the hook with a simple face on top. It still looked awesome, so if you want to hire Laura she will just charge you like $200 bucks a cake. Chase repeated his habit of just taking a bite right out of the cake instead of waiting for us to cut it. I'm wondering how long that will go, hopefully he still does it when he is 18.
Other present highlights included some legos (which I am enjoying just as much as he is), a game with 100 dice that he got just for the dice (including the smallest dice I have ever seen), and some cars and track which I think Miles enjoys just as much as Chase.
So one more year down, if you guess next year's cake I will give you $20 bucks.

Laura's Weekend Off
Well this weekend it was Laura's turn to get a break, this may be the first break on her own since Miles was born other than a vacation with me. So what does Laura do when she gets time to herself? She makes curtains. Almost as exciting as video games. She said some of the other highlights were making breakfast and getting to just sit and eat it along with getting to go out and eat some sushi. Anyways, hopefully she is enjoying it because I am once more reminded why I would never be a stay at home today. Let's run through some highlights.
Sleep or lack there of. I'm pretty sure they have secret councils where they decide who will get up at three AM. First night Miles, second night Chase. Then both up at 5 AM screaming Dad at the top of his lungs. This results in some bad parenting when you only have 4 or 5 hours of sleep. It may start with watching a movie at 4 AM and then letting them watch the same movie again at 11 so you can have a little break while Miles naps.
Miles is understanding more and more each day. Last night at around 7:30 I told him if he played by himself he wouldn't have to go to bed. That stinker spent the next hour playing quietly by himself, stacking blocks, playing with toys, just walking around. Normally this kid doesn't give you 15 minutes to yourself, but he knew what was going on. I would ask him if he wanted to go to bed and he would emphatically say "NO"
You can also tell both kids miss their mom and being at home. Miles keeps pointing to the door and saying he wants to go bye-bye. It's not that they don't have a great time here, but you can tell they like their normal routine. Their mom is probably more fun than me as well.
I have no idea how Laura does the contact by herself. I tried for around 15 minutes this morning by myself and had no luck. You need a third hand to make it work, so basically I was just torturing him. Grandma had a good iron grip though of the head and got the eye open just long enough.
Chase also got his first real sledding experience on the old St. Joe hill. Not a bad gig for the kid, he gets to ride down and then someone pulls him back up. Thankfully grandpa was there so we could trade off on the rides.
One day to go and then back to work for me and Laura comes back on down. I'm sure that will be a fun goodbye tomorrow. ISU game tonight to see if they can knock off Kansas.

Stupid Wii
You know those stories you heard about stupid people who threw their Wii remotes through their TV. Welcome our family to this fun little group. I got home today and turned on my TV upstairs. It wasn't working. This is normal with this TV as it usually has to restart itself for about a minute before you can use it. This is what they call a "smart tv" I guess. Well then I notice a little crack in the corner of the TV and I was pretty sure I knew what happened.
I called Laura over and she confirmed that Chase had got a little excited and threw the wii remote into the TV while he was bowling. This is why you should use the wrist strap. How he got it to go that far and right into the TV is a little ridiculous. So now I'm in the market for a TV again, fantastic.
Miles has decided he is done with hi-chair (debating how to spell this). Laura asked if he wanted to sit it in and he said "no", then he walked over to the chair and pointed to it and said "sit". So time to take the hi-chair to Val and Scott, we won't be needing that again.
We also found out that Miles needs some help walking. He is flat footed and rolling his ankles a little bit. So he gets to have braces for the next year and a half along with his contact. This kid is going to owe us. He is getting some cool comic book braces though so he's got that going for him. At the end of the day if these are the main issues he has during childhood, we will deal with it.
So basically my kids cost us about $1000 dollars today between the TV and the leg braces. I'm keeping all of this in a ledger for them to pay us back later.
Laura was in charge of Valentine's day this year and I was pretty sure she had decided we didn't have time to do anything. She surprised me Friday night by telling me we were going to go to the Children's museum, but when I met her after work there were no kids. I thought it would be awkward if we still went to the children's museum so we decided to go out to eat and go to the "Book of Mormon" instead. Very good musical, although slightly innapropriate.

My Bottom is Sick
Chase was having some issues this past Thursday and after taking a bathroom break he yelled out to Laura. "My butt is sick, My butt is sick!" Laura went in to check what was going on and he told her "My butt threw up, I need to eat healthy foods to make it better" Supposedly this went on all day. I used it to my advantage when I got home and he wanted to eat my ice cream. I told him it would make his stomach feel sick again. That's the key, use their own logic against them.
Laura tried to get Chase to call me to and tell me but I wasn't around at work. So then she tried to get him to leave me a message. Let's just say that Chase doesn't quite understand how that works. He just kept yelling my name into the phone and I would hear Laura saying "He's not there, you have to just leave him a message". Eventually she just had to hang up the phone.
Miles has learned how to say yes and no, which is both a good thing and a bad thing. Instead of the pointing and yelling I now get a very emphatic head shake either up and down or side to side. On the down side I hear a lot of "No's" as I try to figure out what he exactly wants. It is a very high pitched "no" at this point as well.
Next weekend is Laura's free weekend as long as a blizzard doesn't hit Iowa. We are heading down to watch some ISU basketball and hang out with the family.

Bachelor Weekend
What does a weekend without kids look like? Basically it looks like me in a chair for over 10 hours a day watching TV and playing video games. It includes things like Chipotle dinner, taco doritos, cans of pop, and ice cream. If you are currently a parent and don't give yourself a break every once in a while, you should. Laura and I have decided to take the kids to Iowa on our own every once in a while. It's a win-win, grandparents get to see the kids, the parent gets a much needed break. Not to say you don't miss your kids during the timeframe, because here's all the fun things you miss.
Chase basically asks me every time he sees me if I'm staying home for the day. If I say yes, I get a loud "yes" from Chase with a fist pump included. Laura's even taught him how to do a double fist pump. Miles meanwhile laughs hysterically every time he sees me, except on facetime tonight. There he gave me the cold shoulder for awhile. I should really record these so I can play them back the first time they miss curfew and are not excited to see me sitting on the couch waiting.
Miles has progressed to full blown walking or waddling everywhere. He's pretty impressed with himself as he motors around. The only issue is he can get to you a lot faster now, so escaping him does not come with much success at this point. We are also at the point and yell stage of communication. I'm ready for more words and less anger.
Miles also loves sports at this moment. Any ballgame causes a wild reaction with a lot of pointing and yelling of ball. He can even just hear a ball bouncing and get excited. Hopefully this continues.
Steph bought Chase a Kids dance game for the Xbox and that kid has got some moves! His favorite right now is the song Despicable me, so I'm sure he's walking into school right now singing "I'm having a bad, bad day, something something something get out of my way. Whoever picks the dance moves for those songs is terrible, I think I could do better. We will have to put it on youtube later.
Well back to StarCraft for me. One more day of silence. :)

Everyone out of the water!!!
The most feared words of people swimming with sharks? No, the most feared words of parents with toddlers in the community swimming pool. Chase and I were swimming in the pool on Saturday when they asked us to get out, I figured they wanted us to take a break or something, which was a little odd. Then about 5 lifeguards sprinted to the far end of the pool with nets and gloves and concerned looks on their faces. Yes, it takes 5 lifeguards to find some floaters.
Immediately all of the parents start checking swimsuits and diapers to make sure it wasn't their kid. We all take it as an opportunity to remind our kids again that we do not poop in the pool, number one is OK, sometimes, but never number 2. The kids enjoyed saying the word poop.
I never did get to see the kid who caused it. They should have made the parents do the walk of shame and explain to all of the other kids why we couldn't go swimming for the next hour as they cleaned it out. Thank god it wasn't Chase and that their was an indoor playground upstairs
On another milestone note almost as important as witnessing our first exit from the pool, Mr. Miles decided he should try to start walking. He now will waddle about 5 or 6 steps from one person to the other. Although the sense of balance isn't quite there as evidenced by some faceplants. So basically the kid could walk if he would just quit relying on things to hold onto.
Chase has also started to get into board games. We decided to skip the games like Chutes and Ladders and jump right into risk and settlers of Cataan. He's advanced for his age. While we were playing risk Laura and I thought it would be a good time to teach him some geography. We showed him that we live in the Western United States, and Mom came from somewhere south of Japan. Then I asked him who the President of the United States was. Chase's response.... Santa.
